About

I’m Julia Schroeder, a multidisciplinary artist and communications specialist based in Chicago. I go by the moniker of Spoolia Spirals, which stems from a childhood nickname.

As I grew older, there was something a couldn’t quite figure out. Like something was missing. My anxiety spiked attacked almost daily and I was in a dark space. I missed the feeling of spinning in circles as a child. Until I found joy through flow arts and connecting with other kindred spirits.

In 2017, while wrapping up my degree in public relations at Northern Michigan University, I fell in love with hoop dance. This was not long after I had begun to reconnect with my body, mind, and spirit through yoga and other healing modalities.

At that time, I was unaware of how much my dedication to practicing hoop tricks would alleviate my anxiety, strengthen my intuition, and help me discover joy in community.

Hooping set ablaze the fire I had just begun to kindle, which enabled me to break free from the things that held me back. While this journey remains an ebb and flow, hooping reminds me how good it can feel to be alive.

These days, you can find me on the shores of Lake Michigan fire dancing, leading hoop workshops, writing my book, creating zines, spinning on a lyra (AKA aerial hoop), or walking my dog.

I very much enjoy sharing my love of flow arts through performances, teaching workshops, and curating events. I’m always looking for more opportunities to collaborate in uplifting the community!
